If there's one piece of advice we give every couple planning a Hawaii wedding, it's this: schedule your portraits around golden hour. Nothing else comes close.
What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the 45–60 minutes just before sunset when the sun is low on the horizon and casts a warm, soft, directional light across everything it touches. In Hawaii, this light turns skin tones warm and glowing, makes the ocean sparkle, and paints the sky in shades of orange, pink, and purple.
What Time Is Golden Hour in Hawaii?
In Hawaii, sunset typically falls between 5:45–7:15 PM depending on the time of year. Summer sunsets run later (closer to 7:15), while winter sunsets are earlier (around 5:45–6:00). We always check the exact sunset time for your wedding date and build your portrait timeline backward from there.
How to Plan Your Timeline Around It
We recommend ending your ceremony 60–90 minutes before sunset so you have time for family formals, wedding party photos, and then private couple portraits during golden hour. Even 15 minutes of golden hour light produces some of the most stunning images of the entire day.
Best Golden Hour Locations on Oahu
Ko Olina lagoons face west and are perfect for sunset portraits — the calm water reflects the sky beautifully. The North Shore cliffs and Sunset Beach also deliver incredible light. Kualoa Ranch catches late afternoon mountain light in a completely different but equally stunning way.
